Still think that spyware is just a nuisance? The Indian Express reports that a major spyware infection has hit the Indian External Affairs Ministry. The Ministry handles sensitive diplomatic relations with other countries, including India’s troubled relationship with Pakistan.

The External Affairs Ministry reports that many of its 600 computers, especially those in the Ministry’s Pakistan section, senior Secretaries and Joint Secretaries were infected with spyware that sent a duplicate copy of all email generated on an infected computer to a separate email address. The spyware problem was first discovered in the Minister of State’s office, on a computer normally used by the Minister’s personal staff.

Subsequent checks of other computers found that the problem was widespread. The spyware has been removed from the computer and Ministry employees are now cautioned to encrypt email messages, avoid the use of personal email accounts on office computers and to avoid visiting blogs and social networking sites.

John Schiefer was sentenced this week to four years in a federal penitentiary for hacking, fraud and wiretapping. Schiefer was convicted of infecting as many as 250,000 computers with spyware that gave Schiefer access to private information. The FBI arrested Schiefer in 2007 as part of a wide-ranging undercover investigation it called Operation Bot Roast II. The investigation was aimed at hackers and other Internet criminals.

Mahalo, a startup search engine company, employed Schiefer. Mahalo executives denied knowing that Schiefer was involved in criminal activities, despite Schiefer’s previous convictions. Mahalo CEO Jason Calacanis says that he hopes to rehire Schiefer once he is released from prison.

Schiefer reportedly developed his botnet when he was employed by 3G Communications of Los Angeles. The malicious software allowed Schiefer to see private financial transactions and empty victims’ PayPal and bank accounts.

Schiefer also collected funds from Internet marketing companies to install adware on unsuspecting victims, and used his network of compromised computers to launch denial-of-service attacks on Web sites. As part of his sentence, Schiefer must make restitution of nearly $20,000 to PayPal and other victims of his illegal activities. His sentence is relatively light; Schiefer had faced up to 60 years in prison and fines of up to $1.75 million dollars.

Spyware is making headlines once again, this time in connection with the attempted theft of more than $300 million dollars. That’s right. Two men were convicted in a British court of trying to steal more than £229 million (USD$323 million) from Sumitomo Mitsui bank. Most bank robbers use a mask or gun when they do their work, but for these gentlemen, their weapon of choice was spyware.

The court heard testimony about a complex plot hatched by “Lord” Hugh Rodley and Durrington businessman David Nash, to steal hundreds of millions of pounds from the Japan-based Sumitomo Mitsu bank in London. An unidentified insider provided the men with late-night access to the corporate offices of the bank.

While they were in the bank, the would-be thieves loaded spyware onto office computers. The spyware – actually a keylogger – captured user names, passwords and other vital information the thieves planned to use to order the transfer of funds in £12.5 million increments (USD$17.6 million) to other accounts around the world.

The spyware provided the thieves with access to accounts belonging to Toshiba, Nomura, and Sumitomo Chemical, some of Japan’s largest corporations. The money transfers were foiled only due to idiosyncrasies in the process of international money transfers. These “field logging errors” prevented the theft and eventually led back to the thieves themselves.
